Ocean to Idaho
Mile 146: Tribes & Dams
The first of 8 dams rises out of the river at mile 146. Bonneville Dam is the first major man-made obstacle fish hit as they migrate from the ocean to Idaho. Several types of salmon and steelhead are protected by the Endangered Species Act. They must pass the dam and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers must help them. Tribal fishing has an important role at this point in the river too.
